Pride in EDI
Article 2: The Convention applies to every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, sex, religion, language, abilities or any other status, whatever they think or say, whatever their family background.
As a Gold Rights Respecting school, we are proud to also be a Gold Pride in EDI best practice school. We aim to make our school a safe and inclusive environment for all and to ensure equality and respect for the LGBTQ+ community.
What is Pride in EDI?
Pride in EDI is a recognised Award Programme that gives staff, students, parents and governors the confidence and strategies to implement an LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum to successfully eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. It is designed to prepare children and young people for life and to give them a good understanding of how Equality and Diversity is protected by the Equality Act 2010. Please take a look at our child friendly Code of Conduct.
Pride Patrol
The Pride Patrol are a group of children from across school who act as our equality ambassadors. They help create a school community where everyone celebrates diversity and is protected in accordance with the nine protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010. The Pride Patrol work to promote inclusivity and raise awareness of issues which affect the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride in Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Gold Award!
Well done to everyone at Cockton Hill Junior School – we achieved our Pride in EDI Gold Award as we promote and build a future of inclusion and social justice in our school. We have worked on developing strategies and confidence to implement an LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum to successful eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.
Anti-Bullying Week
As part of anti-bullying week we explored our Code of Conduct and the protected characteristics. Each class was allocated with one of the protected characteristics and asked create a design or image that would represent the given characteristic in a child friendly way. These designs contributes towards our whole school, child friendly Code of Conduct created by the children. This is displayed in the main reception, in classes and around school.
LGBT History Month
LGBT+ History Month is an annual event intended to celebrate and spread awareness of the LGBTQ+ community’s numerous contributions throughout history. In the UK, LGBTQ+ History Month is held in February. As part of our Pride in EDI Award, we found out more about the LGBTQ+ community and how to spread awareness. Pride events are an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and gender differences in our world, promoting equal rights for all. The events are also a celebration of how far equal rights have come and how LGBTQ+ people are viewed in society. Children across school used a range of picture books throughout LGBTQ+ History Month.
IDAHOBIT Day
The Pride Patrol in school organised an event in school to raise awareness of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. They began by delivering a whole school assembly to raise awareness of discrimination and celebrate diversity.
Transgender Awareness Week
We are all made up of different identities. We can describe ourselves using different identities relating to our ethnicity, culture, religion, gender and age. During Transgender Awareness week we reflected on our own identities and what make us special and unique.
Pride Month
At CHJS, we are working towards our Gold Pride in EDI award. Pride Month takes place every year in June as a celebration designed to recognise the influence of the LGBTQ+ community. Celebrating diversity and people’s right to live how they choose without celebration, Pride Month promotes positivity and equal rights for all. Pride Patrol organise a fundraiser to celebrate equality and diversity.
